What Is A Serpentine Belt?

Serpentine BeltThe Serpentine Belt is a long rubber belt that helps power important parts of your car’s engine. It is sometimes referred to as the accessory drive belt. Older belts (made before 2000) were constructed from a material called neoprene. Unfortunately, these belts often cracked over time because neoprene gets brittle as it ages.

Serpentine Belts New Material

Newer belts are made from a stronger material called EPDM, which handles heat and wear much better than the older versions. Instead of cracking like the old ones, newer belts wear out more like car tires. The grooves in the belt become worn down and wider. When this occurs, the belt can start slipping, leading to increased noise and issues with your car’s performance.

When Should You Check and Replace the Serpentine Belt?

We recommend inspecting the serpentine belt at around 50,000 miles and replacing it at about 90,000 miles. It’s also a good idea to replace the belt tensioner (the part that keeps the belt tight) at the same time. Doing both together helps your new belt last longer and function better.
